پورا دکھ اور آدھا چاند
ہجر کی شب اور ایسا چاند
Complete sorrow & half a moon, a night of separation & such a moon.
دن میں وحشت بہل گئی
رات ہوئی اور نکلا چاند
Fears were soothed during the day, night fell, then came the moon.
کس مقتل سے گزرا ہوگا
اتنا سہما سہما چاند
Through what bloody fields it must've passed, so subdued is this moon.
یادوں کی آباد گلی میں
گھوم رہا ہے تنہا چاند
In a crowded street of memories, strolling alone is the moon.
میری کروٹ پر جاگ اٹھے
نیند کا کتنا کچا چاند
It wakens as I toss in bed, so weak of sleep is the moon.
میرے منہ کو کس حیرت سے
دیکھ رہا ہے بھولا چاند
With such amazement on my face, staring at this innocent moon.
اتنے گھنے بادل کے پیچھے
کتنا تنہا ہوگا چاند
Behind this thick cover of clouds, how alone must be the moon?
اتنے گھنے بادل کے پیچھے
کتنا تنہا ہوگا چاند
Unshed tears, bathed in light, spring-hearted, desert-bodied moon.
اتنے روشن چہرے پر بھی
سورج کا ہے سایا چاند
Such a bright face and yet, the sun's shadow is the moon.
جب پانی میں چہرہ دیکھا
تو نے کس کو سوچا چاند
When you saw your reflection in the water, whom did you think of, O moon?
برگد کی اک شاخ ہٹا کر
جانے کس کو جھانکا چاند
Shifting away a banyan’s branch, whom did you peek at, O moon?
بادل کے ریشم جھولے میں
بھور سمے تک سویا چاند
On a silken swing of clouds, sleeping till dawn is the moon.
رات کے شانے پر سر رکھے
دیکھ رہا ہے سپنا چاند
Resting its head on night’s lap, deep in dreams is the moon.
سوکھے پتوں کے جھرمٹ پر
شبنم تھی یا ننھا چاند
On a bunch of dry leaves, was it dew or a tiny moon?
ہاتھ ہلا کر رخصت ہوگا
اس کی صورت ہجر کا چاند
With a wave of the hand, bid adieu, an image of separation is the moon.
صحرا صحرا بھٹک رہا ہے
اپنے عشق میں سچا چاند
Wandering from desert to desert, true to its love is the moon.
رات کے شاید ایک بجے ہیں
سوتا ہوگا میرا چاند
It must be one at night, deep asleep must be my moon.
